Last night was Zach's first Pinewood Derby. No, our camera wasn't working, but, yes, I am hoping to have some pictures sent to me soon. It was a pretty exciting event! Zach and another boy in his troop raced against each other four different times on different tracks and tied each time. The judges decided to race them backwards to be able to declare a winner and award the respective trophies. Zach was pretty excited to get 2nd place since it took racing his car backwards to lose any of his races!
(Here's a random pic of Zach w/something else he was proud of building...does that count?)

Thoughts with sick kids
To pass the time w/my sick kiddos, we've been looking at old blog posts and pictures/videos of them. I found this quote that I posted a few years ago, but I still really love it!
"I'm grateful my children demand I talk to them when I don't feel like talking, feed them when I'm not hungry, and change their diapers when I'm all dressed up and ready to go somewhere special. I don't think I'd discover the world outside my own needs without them."
"I'm grateful my children have broken nearly everything in my home and used a crayon or ink marker on the rest. They've taught me that things aren't important, but people are."
"I'm grateful my children get their pants dirty, pick their noses, burp without saying 'excuse me' and quarrel in public so I'll never be able to get too arrogant, proper, or judgmental of other people's children."
"I'm grateful my children always need new shoes, piano books, haircuts, food, and underwear. That way, I don't have to think about a new sofa. It's difficult to get wealthy and think about luxuries when you have to buy toilet paper and milk by the truckload each week."
"I'm grateful my children insist I hug, kiss, rock, or put my arms around them often. Otherwise, I think I'd forget how the sense of touch is so healing."

Reminiscing
I'm in the process of cleaning out my closet and organizing (and catching up on picture books)...so enjoy this trip down memory lane.
First there were two in our family...
Then three (how sweet is Zach in this picture?)...
Then four (gotta love Camilla's cheeks)...
Then five (probably a little too cold for an outdoor picture in New York with a three week old)...
Then six (Emma joined the gang)...
Look forward to seven in a few more months!
(78 days until we get to meet our little guy, but who's counting?!? Okay, it will probably be more like 90, but we'll keep you all posted...)

I know it's not right...

but that doesn't mean we shouldn't enjoy January weather at the beach in the mid 70's when the kids have the day off school! Sorry for all of you bracing for more snow...is this enough incentive to come and visit!?!?! :)

Green Smoothies
We've had spinach smoothies for quite a while, but lately we've been adding different "greens" and increasing the veggie to fruit ratio. It's been neat to see the kids have notice that they have more energy, don't feel as "snacky", don't crave as many sweets, and feel healthier. Figuring out recipes they like, however, is a work in progress...

Baking with a 2 year old
Emma (looking at the pureed squash):Is that yummy?
Mommy: Kind of.
Emma: Is it gross?
Mommy: No, it's squash.
Emma: Oh...it's squash.
Emma: Is that chocolate?
Mommy: No, it's nutmeg.
Emma: It's an egg?
Mommy: No, it's nutmeg.
Emma: Oh...nutmeg. Is THAT chocolate?
Mommy: No, it's cinnamon.
Emma: Oh...cinnamon. You put it in there?
Mommy: Yep. In the bowl.
Emma: For a party?
Mommy: No, for our family to eat.
Emma: Oh...to eat. What's THAT?
Mommy: Sugar.
Emma: Sugar?
Mommy: Yep.
Emma (starting to stir the ingredients): Can I be careful, Momma?
Mommy: Yes, you can be careful.
Emma: watching me get out the Pam spray) Don't spray my eyes, okay Momma?
Mommy: Okay, I won't spray your eyes.
Is there anything better than just hanging out and chatting with a two year old?!?

Coat Rack
My kids FINALLY have a place beside an empty laundry basket to put their coats and backpacks! YEAH for simple, inexpensive solutions!

Latter-day Prophets
I had about as much luck with this video as I usually do trying to catch Emma's singing on video...as soon as she sees me (and I'm hiding the camera between my seat and the head rest) she either stops singing or just starts being really silly to show off. And, yes, she obviously hates wearing her tights!

SNOW!
Our kids were so excited to play in the snow as soon as we got to Idaho, that once the minimal amount of snow was gone in Grandma and Grandpa's yard, they filled a bucket with snow from the neighbor's yard! And, yes, it should be assumed, that each grandchild was turned upside down and dunked head first into that bucket of snow! Over the next few days we got to watch it snow and play in the snow even more - lucky California kids!
